What is the air cushion - and how do you replace it?

A simple task – should be performed after 10 days of continuous use of the vehicle. The air cushion is an extra buffer that protects the hot water tank from blows from the fresh water pump, a simple measure to ensure the durability of the heater.

  1. Start by turning off the vehicle’s fresh water pump.
  2. Open a tap and allow the water pressure to drop. Leave the tap open.
  3. Open the heater’s safety/drain valve for 5-10 seconds and then close it again.
  4. Restart the fresh water pump.
  5. Once you have a steady flow of water from the tap again, you can turn off the tap again.

Winterisation – what is it and why should I do it?

Winterisation involves preparing the Alde heating system and fresh water system for winter conditions by protecting them against cold and frost. This is important to ensure that your water and heating systems are in good working order.

How to drain the water from the heater and the fresh water system:

  1. Turn off the Alde heating system and the vehicle’s fresh water pump.
  2. Open all water taps to the middle position (between hot and cold), the water pressure will decrease and the water will then run out. Leave all taps in the open position.
  3. Ensure that any shower head is empty by unscrewing it and placing it on the floor.
  4. Open the safety/drain valve(s) on the fresh water line, which often have a yellow handle; there may be one or more. Leave the valves in the open position.
  5. Ensure that water has drained from under the vehicle, for example by placing a bucket under the vehicle to collect the water.
  6. Ensure that the fresh water tank is also emptied of water.

If you have the heating on throughout the winter and insulated tanks/pipes, you may not need to winterise, although this varies between vehicle models.

Incorrect temperature in Alde control panel

Does the temperature in your vehicle not match the temperature displayed on the panel? This can be easily remedied using the Offset function in the Aldes control panel.

  1. Navigate to settings; this may look different depending on the boiler model. Usually, you press the MENU button or the cog icon.
  2. Proceed to the function called ‘Offset’ or ‘Sensor calibration’; in older models of the Alde Control Panel, look for the temperature icon.
  3. In the offset function, you can set the temperature to +/- 5 degrees.

One possible reason why the temperature on the panel may be affected is that it is mounted on a door with a draught or in an area that easily becomes warm, e.g. above the refrigerator.

Doesn’t it get warm everywhere, or do you hear strange noises?

Uneven heat distribution or strange noises are usually caused by air pockets in the system. Air pockets in the system can block the circulation of the heating fluid, which reduces heat transfer efficiency and causes uneven heating and/or gurgling and banging noises. You can easily get rid of this by bleeding the system.

Before attempting to bleed a system, ensure that the system is warm and switched off. Follow the instructions below and repeat if necessary.

  1. Make sure the system is warm and set the circulation pump to the highest speed. Let the pump run for 10 minutes. This should force any air bubbles out through the glycol tank.If the above does not help, also perform steps 2-4:
  2. Locate the air vents; they may be found on convector heaters, towel rails or the underfloor heating system, for example.
  3. To ventilate the system manually: Turn the air valve counter-clockwise to open. Allow the air to flow out, close the valve when liquid comes out.
  4. Check circulation: Ensure proper circulation by feeling for high points and heat emitters around the vehicle.

Alde Control Panel lights up my vehicle at night – what can I do?

You can switch off the Alde Control Panel in two different ways. Either via ‘Display’ or Night Mode. You can access both menu options by pressing the MENU button or the cogwheel icon on the Alde control panel.

  • Night Mode: Alde’s night mode allows you to change selected settings during a specific time period. On older models of the Alde control panel, press the display button; on newer models, activate ‘Dark status page’. The screen will turn off completely after 30 seconds.
  • Display settings: Change ‘Status page’ to ‘dark’. The screen will now become darker and after 30 seconds it will turn off completely.
What are the three most important things to consider when I have an Alde hydronic heating system?
  1. Replace glycol fluid at the correct intervals. It is important to use an Alde-approved glycol fluid to ensure optimum performance and service life of your heating system. When using Alde Premium Antifreeze, the replacement interval is five years.
  2. Remember to winterise! Winterising means preparing your Alde heating system and the vehicle’s fresh water system for winter conditions by protecting it from cold and frost. This is important to ensure that your water and heating systems are in good working order when spring arrives.
  3. Test the system before the camping season. This is especially important if you have stored your vehicle during the winter. Check the following:
    • Do you have the correct fluid level in the expansion tank?
    • Does it get warm inside the vehicle?
    • Does water come out of the tap?
    • Is the gas system approved?
